He may even have propounded it with ruthless rigour. In relation to the reformed movement, a person may have held a very strict adherence to the tenets of the historic reformed faith. It includes customs, habits, practices, etc. While the passage in view has a direct and primary application to morals, it also includes values, positions, ethical standards, theological views, among others. These men have been infected by the bad company bug and they are now exhibiting the full blown symptoms of the wrong company they have been keeping. What has happened? What is the explanation of such radical changes? Bad company has ruined good morals. I have been shocked to see men that I respected so much because of their unflinching commitment to the historic reformed position suddenly begin to give unbelievable concessions in regard to non-reformed positions that they so vehemently defended in previous years! I have listened to some of them with utter shock as they now promote or justify their new positions! It’s just that the drug dealers give me an opportunity to pursue some of my own ambitions. Neither can I claim that I still hate drugs. I cannot patronize drug dens, attend drug parties and events, exchange gifts and opportunities with drug dealers and claim that I am not a drug dealer myself. If I hung around with drug dealers, soon I will be known as one of them and worse still might even start indulging in the same. If we make friends with bad characters or questionable individuals, it’s a matter of time before we too become questionable fellows. If any of us no matter how young or old subject or expose ourselves to bad company or to negative peer pressure, we will not escape unscathed. None of us are immune from bad company ruining good morals. More than this and worse still, even reformed Baptist leaders (pastors/elders) can fall pray to the undesirable effects of bad company and negative peer pressure. Worse still even Christian leaders can fall prey to the devastating effects of bad company as well as to negative peer pressure. Even adults are susceptible to the damaging effects of bad company and can fall pressure to adverse or negative peer pressure. Just like I thought that the phrase ‘peer pressure’ was also for young people and children.īut the last 2 or 3 years in the reformed movement in Zambia have taught me otherwise. I was convinced that it is meant for the young and inexperienced who are still impressionable and gullible. ‘Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.” (1 Corinthians 15.33)įor a long time I thought that this verse only applies to children and young people.
